In the academic year 2011/2012, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) officially receives 10,248 new undergraduate and diploma students. The new students’ admission ceremony took place at the square in front of Grha Sabha Pramana on Thursday (8/9), led by UGM Rector, Prof. Ir. Sudjarwadi, M. Eng., Ph.D., and marked by putting on university jackets to student representatives.

In his speech, the Rector said that UGM students should have a vision to serve the interests and prosperity of the nation based on the values of Universitas Gadjah Mada; to develop and apply science for civilization, usefulness, and happiness. "Three elements of high civilization are the quality of faith, sciences, and culture," he added.

The Rector said that amid the current global situation, there are certainly many roles that can be played by UGM students, especially after their graduation when they have a career and become leaders, namely to address the nation’s problems through UGM values. The new students are the nation's best sons and daughters. They are talented children on whom we take pride. Therefore, during their study in the academic and research atmosphere, students not only learn in the classroom, but also produce works and achievements. "Many of their seniors have recorded world achievements," Rector said.

By studying at UGM, students are expected to become the future leaders of the nation and their family. UGM should be grateful that people still believe it as a place for talented children to study. "We want UGM students to become leaders in all lines of work and become leaders in various affairs, not only in humanitarian field, but also in the field of spiritual, research, philanthropic agencies, non-governmental organizations, entrepreneurs and business, government, either in the executive, legislative, or judiciary as well as in other fields," he continued.

In this ceremony, the Rector symbolically put on university jackets to four new student representatives, namely Amelinda Silvana (Faculty of Economics and Business), Meikel Kotouki (Medical Faculty), Seo Jung Hyun (Korean student from Faculty of Economics and Business), and Cecile Alice Emilie Innocenti  (French student from Faculty of Social and Political Sciences).

Director of UGM Academic Administration, Dr. Budi Prasetyo Widyobroto, D.E.A, D.E.S.S., added that the 10,248 new students of academic year 2011/2012 consist of 7,522 undergraduate students and 2,726 diploma students. They come from 1,646 high schools, vocational schools or Madrasah Aliyah from over 355 regencies/municipalities in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the new S-1 students have been selected from 136,442 applicants. "So the average level of competence is 1 versus 18," Budi Prasetyo said.

That number, according to Budi, includes 309 international-class students across 8 departments, while students from outside of Indonesia are as many as 50 people from 7 countries. For the percentage of gender is relatively balanced, i.e., 50.50 % males and 49.50 % females.

Central Java province has the most students to study at UGM. Next it is Yogyakarta, West Java, East Java, DKI Jakarta, Banten, North Sumatra, Riau, Lampung and East Kalimantan.
