YOGYAKARTA – Several countries around the world are still haunted by the threat of global crisis. Not only that, the civilization of the world is facing serious problems dealing with the degradation of natural resources, energy, environment and food. In fact, in the midst of resource crisis, some European countries are now facing a financial crisis. Meanwhile, Indonesia is still facing major challenges in which the economic development model has moved economic development which tends to be extractive and short term. Even there is a big trend in which efforts to maintain the environmental functions and utilization of natural resources sustainably are still far from expectation.
"Therefore, it needs new pattern of approach, the approach of Green Economy, where the model of economic development approach no longer relies on economic development based on exploitation of natural resources and environment exaggeratedly," Head of Office of Regional Economic Integration (OREI), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Prof. Iwan Jaya Azis said in the Open Lecture on Knowledge Partnership held by UGM Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) at UGM Senate Hall, Tuesday (13/9).
In the discussion which was hosted by former Education Minister, Prof. Dr. Bambang Sudibyo, M.B.A, Iwan Jaya Aziz firmly explained that a green economic approach policy is a big leap to leave the economic practices that prioritize short-term profit which have inherited a variety of urgent issues to be addressed, including moving low carbon economy.
The lecturer at Cornell University, United States, added that policy of green economic approach is expected to replace the environmental policies in the past which often focused on short-term solution. He even considers that through a new approach of economic development policy is able to emphasize the aspect of "environmental conservation" and "economic growth". "Green Economy Model approach is also able to answer the dependency between economics and ecosystems as well as negative impacts resulting from economic activity, including climate change and global warming," he said.
Open Lecture on Knowledge Partnership program is organized as a series of activities of Research Week 2011 by LPPM. The Open Lecture that has been implemented since 2006 aims to expand communication and opportunities in research collaboration between UGM researchers and experts with their counterparts from all over the world.
