On 19th September 2011 UGM Faculty of Biology commemorates its 56th anniversary. The Faculty of Biology is expected to be able to contribute energy, ideas, and graduates/biologists through improved education system and excellent management. The dream to promote the name of the institution in national and international scope becomes a commitment through the hard work for the entire academic community.
"This has become the commitment of the Faculty of Biology to continue to promote the institutions name in national and international scope," said Dean of the Faculty of Biology Dr.Retno Peni Sancayaningsih, M. Sc, when submitting the dean’s annual report, in the framework of the 56th Anniversary commemoration, at the Ground Assembly Room in the Faculty of Biology on Tuesday (20/9).
The 56th Anniversary commemoration of the Faculty of Biology raises the theme of Role of Biologists in the Protection and Management of Sustainable Biodiversity. This theme, said Peni, is in line with the vision and mission of the Faculty to achieve excellent tropical biology education nationally and well-known internationally.
In her report the Dean assessed that in spite of the changes in the new students’ selection system, Faculty of Biology student profiles in general do not experience significant changes. According to Peni, in 2011 the number of new students accepted in the UGM Faculty of Biology increases compared to the year 2010 from 196 to 207 new students. "On the one hand this is good news, but on the other hand this is a challenge for us to provide quality education, facilities and infrastructure for these students," she added.
The number of graduate students, both in study programs of S2 and S3, has increased to 57 students (50 students of S2 and 7 students of S3). This happens because in the last 2 years promotional activities were held to several government agencies, both at provincial and district levels. While the S3 course of Biological Sciences recently has received a certificate of accreditation from BAN-PT with B mark.
“The certificate is obtained thanks to the hard work of the management considering that the management of S3 study program has not been conducted for a long time in the Faculty, because previously it was conducted by the management of UGM Graduate School” said Peni.
Specifically about the research, in 2011 the research of faculty staff and students of the Faculty of Biology is directed in addition to advancing the science of Biology, also for the community dedication and empowerment. During the year, 60 researches are funded by various sources. Research with foreign cooperation in 2011 involves two faculty researchers, namely: Dr.Endang Semiarti and Dr.rer.nat.Ari Indrianto while 2 other lecturers receive post-doc funding, Dr.Kumala Goddess, M. Sc through Fulbright grant and Dr. Yekti Asih Purwestri, from NAIST, Japan, PAR grants for Dr.Rina Kasiamdari, as well as Hitachi grant for Dr.Budi Setiadi Daryono.
