YOGYAKARTA-Two students of Faculty of Medicine UGM, Erlangga Prasamya and Yoga Rossi Widya Utama, have recently presented the results of their research on the European Student Conference (ESC) forum in Charite Universitat medizin Berlin, Germany, from 21 to 24 September 2011. The two students who are undergoing clinical rotation had the opportunity to present their research after going through a rigorous selection, competing with participants from more than 60 countries.
At the forum, Erlangga presented his research entitled Effectof Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) water extract on Frequency of Macrophages expressing COX-2 Enzymes on CFA (Complete Freund Adjuvant) Induced Rattus Novergicus. The pharmacological research discusses traditional medicine of noni fruit on rheumatoid arthritis disease with mouse model. The research was guided by dr. Setyo Purwono, M. Kes., Sp.PD.and dr. Ahmad Ghozali, Sp.PA (K) D.Med.Sc.
Meanwhile, Rossi presented a research Acute Phase Histocompatibility Test of Gypsum-Carbonate Apatite Mixture in Rat’s Soft Tissue. The research in the field of histology discusses the body’s response to bone substituting materials derived from a mixture of gypsum-carbonate apatite. The research was guided by dr. Rina Susilowati, Ph.D., and drg. Ika Dewi Ana, Ph.D.
Rossi said that ESC is one of the world’s largest biomedical conferences held every year and discusses about the development of science and medical technology in the world. The participants range from scientists, students, doctoral candidates, graduate students, doctors, nurses, and other professions related to research in the field of health. "This event is one of the largest biomedical conferences in the world to discuss the development of science and health technology in the world," Rossi said on Monday (26/9).
Rossi and Erlangga said that they gained many benefits from their participation in the ESC, including disseminating research, practising to publish scientific journals in international events, getting the latest sciences and technology in health, and encouraging research activity for Indonesian students, especially in medical sciences."We’re hoping more and more young Indonesian scientists are encouraged to publish & present their researches in the international arena," Erlangga added.
This year, the ESC raises the theme Perspectives and Challenges in Regenerative Medicine. In accordance with the theme, ESC invited several experts in the field of regenerative medicine, among them are Paula M. Cannon, Ph.D., the first scientist who successfully immunized mice against HIV, and Dr. Gero Hutter, who managed to cure patients with HIV. In addition, there was Assoc. Prof. Shoichiro Sumi, Ph.D., who has managed to create an artificial pancreas organ to cure diabetes mellitus in rats. Next, there was Prof. Wolfram Hubertus Zimmermann who has successfully created a functioning heart cells from stem cells.
Workshop and social activities held on the sidelines of the conference are also very interesting, ranging from watching the prostatectomy surgery with Da Vinci method (surgery with robotic assistance to minimize invasion to patients), witnessing neurosurgery, suturing and surgery, leadership training and time management, also fun bike around the city of Berlin.
