Once again, UGM students participated in the international forum. This time, the UGM team consisting of Adhita Sri Prabakusuma (Faculty of Agriculture), Adi Trimulyo (Faculty of Agricultural Technology), Artina Prastiwi (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), and Putri Sekar Pertiwi (Faculty of Agriculture) successfully pass the selection to present their scientific work in two conferences internationally. First is the Second Annual Indonesian Scholars Conference (AISC) 2011 at Asia University, Taichung, Taiwan R.O.C. Second is the Annual Meeting of Science and Technology Studies (AMSTECS) from 10 to 12 June 2011 at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies.
AISC International Conference, Taiwan, was initiated by the Indonesian Muslim Students Association who are studying in Taiwan with the theme of Becoming "Asian Tiger" through Modern Agriculture-Based Industry: Revitalization and Modernization of Education, Technology, Economy, and Investment Climate in Agricultural Sector. While AMSTECS, Japan, was organized by the Institute of Science and Technology Studies (ISTECS).
Adhita Sri Prabakusuma said that in AISC, Taiwan, her team presented a group paper entitled Soy-Sauce Making with Fortification of the Gracilaria Flour. The paper raised the theme of food technology innovations, namely the manufacture of shrimp flavored soy sauce made from shrimp. The product was obtained by processing and re-fermenting tempeh that had been spoiled by the addition of Gracilaria flour (gelatin) as stabilizer. "The result of the research was shrimp flavored sauce with yeast treatment that has viscosity (thickness) similar to the protein content of 5.5% and is also liked organolepticaly by the panelists," he said recently.
In the AMSTECS, Japan, the four friends presented two papers that have been published, namely Agriculture-Husbandry Innovation Program: Dissemination of Good Bacteria-1 (GB-1) Bio-activator Technology through Community Development Strategy and Antiviral Activity Test of God Crown (Phaleria macrocarpa) Infusion Extract to inhibit the Replication of Avian Influenza as In-ovo for Providing Organic Adjuvant Vaccine in Asia.
The first paper described the concept and strategy of rural farmer community empowerment based on dissemination of appropriate technologies through the application of Good Bacteria -1 (GB-1) bio-activator for the processing of organic waste on the community farm. GB-1 bio-activator is a consortium of microbial inoculum that was found by Ir. Gembong Danudiningrat from Yogyakarta. "The community empowerment program that we presented is entitled ‘Livestock Innovation Program (Provita)" TERSENYUM "(Skilled, Healthy, Comfortable, and Self-Sufficient)’," Adhita explained.
The implemented livestock innovation programs include social approach, the application of fermentation technology for super organic fertilizer, liquid fertilizer and bio-insecticide, as well as animal feed supplement. Next are, fermented straw, the conferring of ANDINI outstanding breeder (Active, Dynamic and Innovative), HIAS farm (Green and Beautiful), and the preparation of KUSUMA business initiation team (Independent Business Group).
Furthermore, the second paper is the result of initial studies to test the saponin compounds ability of the Phaleria (Phaleria macrocarpa) extracts for the manufacture of adjuvant (organic solvent) for vaccine that is able to control the replication of avian influenza virus (H5N1). Adi Tri Mulyo added that his team’s participation in this event had the full support of UGM, local government of Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta Provincial Government, Ministry of National Education through the Competitive Scholarship program of Planning and Foreign Cooperation Bureau, the Ministry of National Education, and PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia.
Competitive scholarship program of Ministry of National Education is intended to produce graduates who have a comprehensive vision and understanding of nationality, integrity, and high credibility, winning personality, moderate, and concerned about the nation and state. “Competitive scholarship program opportunities are open for the next generation of Indonesia to continue to excel and make their contribution to Indonesia and we are one of them," said Adi.
After returning from Taiwan and Japan, Adhita and friends, which happened to graduate together last August directly apply the science and technology they had obtained from abroad to continue to develop the community. One of them is by forming clusters of science and technology utilization in the district of Gunung Kidul. "Hopefully, all the knowledge and experience we gained can help build the welfare of the Indonesian nation," said Adi.
