UGM won 1 silver and 1 bronze medals at the 4th National Student Performance in Information and Communication Technology Field (Gemastik) 2011. This competition is held at Ten November Institute of Technology (ITS) from 11 to 13 October 2011. Gemastik is a program of the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DP2M) Higher Education Office in an effort to improve the quality of learners, thus they can take the role as agent of change in advancing ICT and its utilization in Indonesia.
Gemastik held a variety of activities for graduate and diplomas students from universities in Indonesia in the field of ICT. The competition consists of nine categories, namely Intelligent Devices, Applications, Programming, Data Excavation, Network Security, Network Security Competition, Business Games, Game Development, Scientific Writing in the Field of ICT, and Site Design. This year, ITS Surabaya came out as overall winner, followed by the University of Indonesia in second place, Institute Technology of Bandung in third place, and the Universitas Gadjah Mada in fourth place.
Bronze medal won by Firdaus Ismail Sholeh, Poerwiyanto, and Muh. Kozin, Computer Science study program students class of 2008 in category Application Contest. Applications contest is the contest that tests the ability of students in applying ideas, creativity, and solutions in solving the problems in Indonesia with software application. Applications developed by the UGM team named SiPinter, which is an application to filter children’s Internet usage from pornographic content.
Compared with similar applications, this application is capable of detecting pornographic based on the accessed web pages content thus not rely on the URL list of pornographic sites blocking. In addition, parents will be able to obtain reports and configure the application through the web so for parents who travel frequently can monitor and manage Internet usage by children at home.
The application development is motivated by the number of obscene cases performed by elementary school children due to poor supervision and lack of parental education. This application is expected to facilitate the parents in supervising and educating children’s Internet usage.
The silver medal won in the category of Web Design Competition by Trias Nur Rahman, Nurvirta Monarizqa, and Ema Fitriana, students of Information Technology study program class of 2010. The web site design contest in Gemastik is an event to test the ability of students in designing and implementing ideas, creativity, and solutions in building a web site with the problem domain in Technopreneurship. The works made named eMartIndonesia.com, an online supermarket with a delivery order which presents a shopping experience resembles the supermarket in the real world through a website display.
There are three main features that support the shopping conveniences on eMart Indonesia namely easy navigation, drag and drop, and quickshop. The easy navigation feature facilitate users in selecting items to be purchased because it has a bar category and subcategory that refers to the grouping of goods. Next is a drag and drop which allows buyers to drag photos of goods and loading them by dropping it as much as needed into the shopping cart, just like at the when shopping in the real supermarkets. Quickshop allows buyers to search a lot of stuff at once, so you just have to type the name of all goods needed and the quickshop feature will automatically find it for the buyer.
