YOGYAKARTA - UGM Formula car, Bimasakti, again, will participate in a competition, namely the 10th Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan, from 3-7 September 2012 at Aino City, Shizuoka-ken, Japan. This year it is the second for Bimasakti UGM team in the competition aiming to measure students' ability in developing new ideas in formula car creation. Last year, the competition was followed by 86 other teams from Japan, Australia, Thailand, China, India, Korea, and Pakistan.

To improve the capability of the formula car, the Bimasakti team has made various modifications. One of them is to add engine capacity, upgraded from 322 cc to 600 cc. "At least, the capacity of the machine could match the teams from other countries," Bimasakti team leader, Akmal Irfan Majid, said while met on the sidelines of the handover ceremony of engine aid from PT. Federal Karyatama to the team on Friday (13/1) at Department of Mechanical Engineering, UGM Faculty of Engineering.

The Bimasakti team consisting of 23 people, 12 in the core team, 5 experts team, and 6 supporting team also made additions to the design and vehicle performance, especially for the frame, clutch system and gear. "There are better modifications now, because we had learned from our experience in the previous participation," he said.

Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Ir. Tumiran, said the participation of UGM Bimasakti formula car in this competition is expected to improve insight of students to support the progress of automotive world in the future. In connection with the engine aid by PT. Federal Karyatama, it was appreciated by Tumiran. He also expected supports from other stakeholders to encourage students to be better prepared to compete at international level. "I think the assistance does not educate lecturers, but the nation's children for the spirit to compete in developed countries," he said.

Marketing Director of PT. Federal Karyatama, Rudy Hartono Husada, expected the aid can improve the spirit of Bimasakti team members to compete. He mentioned that the aid is in form of Honda CBR 600 RR. The engine has specifications including 4-stroke engine, transverse 4-cylinder, with a maximum torque 66 Nm at 11 250 rpm and maximum power 118 hp at 13,500 rpm.
