The moot court team of Faculty of Law of Universitas Gadjah Mada has become The Champion and 3rd Best Memorial in an international moot court competition, The 2012 Indonesian National Rounds of the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, held at Padjajaran University Bandung from 3-5 February 2012, making them entitled to represent Indonesia at the international level to be held in March 2012 in Washington D.C. The event is to be followed by 120 best law schools from 80 states.

The competition held by Indonesian Society of International Law (ISIL) was followed by 17 Faculties of Law in Indonesia. The Jessup Competition is simulation of international moot court that adopts court system at International Court of Justice. This time the competition raised the case of the legality of a government in international law, use of arms force, state immunity and protection of cultural heritage in war law context.

Deputy Dean for Academic of the Faculty, Dr. Sigit Riyanto, S.H.,LL.M, said in the four preliminary rounds, the UGM team beat 4 other universities, making the jury impressed during the pleading presentation, bringing the team to the semifinals.  Team members, Muhammad Rifky Wicaksono, Ibrahim Hanif, Billy Esratian, Aditya Percaya, Abdou Jallow, Ardianto Budi, Dirgantara Adi, Thomas Peter and Eldo Kredainou have worked hard for four months to prepare memorial, research, argument list and oral pleading.

In the semifinal round the UGM team defeated Universitas Parahyangan unanimously, bringing it to the final round against Universitas Pelita Harapan that had defeated Universitas Indonesia in the semifinals. In the final stage held at Jayakarta Hotel Bandung, a fierce competition took place and the quality of the two best team was observable in presenting oral pleading. “Unconditionally, the panel of judges consisting of Jason Chan Tai-Hui, Ignatius Puguh Priambodo and Michael Scott Carl, declared the UGM team the first winner,” he said on Wednesday (8/2).

Sigit said the achievement is a drastic jump of achievement from the previous years, which was certainly gained through hard work for four months. The achievement is the realisation of the hard work done by everyone in supporting the UGM team. “I hope the UGM team can do the best to make achievements and make Indonesia proud in Washington D.C. in March,” he concluded.
