YOGYAKARTA – Taruna Nusantara Senior High School came out as the champion in Geography Olympiad 2012 for Senior High School students organized by Faculty of Geography of Universitas Gadjah Mada. Meanwhile, SMAN 2 Kediri came second. The third is SMA 1 Kebumen. The winner is awarded a trophy from Minister of National Education. The second winner from Governor of Yogyakarta Special Region while the third from the Rector.
"The winner will be recommended by the Faculty to be admitted at UGM without entrance test and will be freed from education fees or earns a scholarship," Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Alumni and Cooperation, Dr. Lutfi Muta’ali, M.T, said in a press release sent out on Monday (20/2).
The Olympiad entitled "Implementation of Geography Science in Equalizing Dynamics of Sustainable Development in Indonesia” from 17-19 February 2012 at Faculty of Geography was followed by 84 teams from 54 senior high schools in Indonesia. Some participants represent Jayapura, Gorontalo, Tarakan, Batam and from all provinces in Java Island.
Gerry Kristian, the committee chairman, explained winners are selected based on the accumulation of scores in assessment. The first assessment is on the contents of papers and posters submitted by the participants. Furthermore, it is on the score from written test and field test, presentation, and case study. "At the presentation, what assessed is not only the essence of the papers, but also the way the ideas are conveyed for the public, as well as the response they presented at case study," Gerry said.
