YOGYAKARTA – Process of Rector’s election of Universitas Gadjah Mada has started. The registration of Rector candidates for term of office 2012-2017 is open from Thursday, February 23 to March 3, 2012. Those who are interested are welcomed to register. "We expect as many candidates as possible. We opened registration since yesterday," the chairman of the Ad-Hoc Committee of Rector Candidates Selection , Dr. Supama, M.Sc., said to reporters on Friday (24/2).
Supama mentioned that there are at least 12 eligibility criteria for Rector candidates, among others, holding a doctorate degree, being an active civil servant, and having structural positions in universities or an equal position at least for three years. "At least he/she is a chairman of the department in university or echelon 2 official for positions outside of university and an active civil servant," he said.
Furthermore, each candidate is supported by at least five people from UGM. In addition, candidates are required no older than 60 years old at the time appointed. Answering reporters’ questions about the age limit for candidates for the Rector, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Prof. Dr. Sofian Effendi, M.P.I.A, said these requirements refer to the rules of Government Regulation No. 66 Year 2010. The regulation mentioned that who is authorised to appoint and dismiss Rector is the Minister. Further, the rector is a civil servant who is still active. "Retirement issue is important here. The Rector should not be a retired civil servant when he is on duty because the Rector has to sign a legal document which cannot be represented by others, such as signing a diploma certificate," he said.
The election will be held on March 22, 2012 by 23 members of the BoT after previously selecting 3 candidates from joint plenary meeting of the Academic Senate and Council of Professors.
