In recent years, the awareness of Indonesian public to look more attractive has increased. Various skin care attempts are made by using cosmetics to cover the shortage and improve personal performance. Unfortunately, the use of cosmetics is not matched with adequate knowledge on the risks of cosmetic use.
"People today apparently still do not really understand about risks of using cosmetics so that cases of skin disorders due to use of wrong and excessive cosmetics still emerge," Dr. Fajar Waskito, Sp.KK (K), a lecturer of Faculty of Medicine UGM said on Tuesday (28/2) at the Faculty.
Fajar revealed a case found in Yogyakarta shows that 40 percent incidences of skin disease side effects are due to the wrong use of cosmetic products such as those containing Hydroquinone more than 2 percent. In addition, skin disorder occurs due to the use of cosmetics which are not suitable with skin type which causes allergic reaction.
"The most occurrences are in cases where people need to brighten the face but the results are that the face even turns darker because of improper and excessive use of cosmetics while the use does not comply with the rules," he explained.
According to Fajar, the cooperation between various parties is required to provide a more equitable dissemination to the public related to the use of cosmetics as well as their side effects. The socialization is expected to increase public awareness to be more selective in choosing and using cosmetics appropriately according to the rules.
Fajar continued, the Skin and Sexual Health Sciences Section of Faculty of Medicine held a seminar for the public which will discuss about various issues on aging and solutions. The seminar entitled Perform Charmingly and Charismatically was held on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the University Center UGM. Besides, a seminar on Geriatric Medicine for academicians and health practitioners was held from 3-4 March 2012 at Master of Management (MM) UGM Building. "This seminar is expected to provide an overview to the public about aging and all things associated with old age and how to anticipate the possibilities that may arise," he concluded.
