YOGYAKARTA - Universitas Gadjah Mada responded to the calls from National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) on disaster risk reduction efforts by  establishing  research cooperation. The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between UGM and BNPB was conducted in December 2011. In his speech, Dr. Syamsul Maarif, M.Si declared that national disaster resilience became the main capital in disaster risk reduction. Local wisdom needs to be explored through research so that BNPB policy becomes more precise and accurate.

In terms of social science standpoint, disaster is also affected by the collective rational interpretations.
