“So, you have your salary paid in Euro?” asked presenter Rossi Silalahi.
“What’s Euro?” Ahmad Yuniarto asked her back.
“How come that you don’t speak English but able to become the boss of a multi-national company?” Rossi asked another question.
The Chairman of Schlumberger Indonesia just smiled. The alumnnus of Electrical Engineering Department became the ‘star’ in the talkshow Rossy Goes to Campus, at the Faculty of Engineering on Friday (7/9). The famous presenter, Rossy Silalahi, also invited Inspector General of Public Works Ministry, Dr. Ir. Basuki Hadimulyo, M.Sc, cultural expert and former personal assistant of the late Gus Dur, Al-Zastrouw, and member of a hip hop band from Yogyakarta, Mohammad Marzuki or Juki.
Rossy said that Faculty of Engineering of UGM was the eleventh university she visited in the roadshow Rossy Goes to Campus. The event aimed to give the spirit to students to be optimistic in building Indonesia for the future. Rossy invited successful figures to share their stories and experiences to the students.
Ahmad Yuniarto recounted that he started his study at the Electrical Engineering back in 1986. Five years later, he applied for a position at a French company. He did not speak English fluently, but he confidently sat in the selection test.”What made me confident was the fact they prefer me not to speak English. If others trust me, I would be a fool I don’t trust myself.” “But how come that you became director?” As long as we want to work harder, learn more than others, feel more pain than others, all can be done,” he continued.
At school, on campus or at work Yuniarto always held on to and believed in his dream to become his motivator. He always made every one of his dreams a reality. “Apart from dreams, there is situation. When we passed the junior high school, we feared that we would not be admitted to state highschool, feared we would fail. But I tried and get admitted. This is the foundation to boost self-confidence,” he said.
Meanwhile, Basuki Hadimulyo advised students not to be inconfident, be honest, sincere and be proud. By being honest, one will have more confidence when making a decision, because there is nothing to be afraid of. Also being sincere in carrying out work is important. It is no less important to be proud using domestic products. “Not only do we love, but also buy and use our own products,” he said.
