Forty-eight participants, including professors, lecturers, non-teaching staff, and retirees from Universitas Gadjah Mada, participated in the doubles tennis tournament celebrating UGM’s 74th anniversary on December 9-10.
Some participants in the tournament include Professor Mudrajad Kuncoro of the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business, Professor Kuncoro of the UGM Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Professor Wahyudi Kumorotomo of the UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, former Director-General of Vocational Education, Dr. Wikan Sakarinto, and Dr. Heru Susetya of the UGM Veterinary Medicine.
The chair of the committee, Dr. Asikin Nur, said the 48 participants were divided into six groups, Agro, Science, Socio Justitia, Teknika, Medika, and Tri Dharma, with each group evenly distributed according to their tennis playing abilities, ranging from professional to beginner levels.
“The number of participants this time sets a record for the highest in the history of tennis tournaments in celebration of UGM’s anniversary,” said Dr. Nur on Monday (November 11).
He added this sports competition is not about chasing titles but building camaraderie among fellow employees at UGM who share the same hobby of playing tennis.
“Let’s foster a spirit of camaraderie and collectively indulge in our hobby,” Dr. Nur said.
Former UGM Rector Professor Panut Mulyono symbolically opened the doubles tennis tournament and expressed appreciation for the 48 participants.
“This competition is to enhance our friendship and to commemorate the establishment of UGM 74 years ago,” he said.
During the two-day competition, the six groups were further divided into two groups, Pool A and Pool B, to compete against each other. The advanced teams had the highest point scores, ranking first and second in their respective groups.
In the semifinal, the Agro team faced the Teknik team, and the Science team faced the Socio Justitia team. In the final, the Agro team, coordinated by Dr. Nur and Dr. Sakarinto, faced the Science team, coordinated by Slamet Setya and Sudarmana.
The Science team ultimately became the champion with a 3-1 lead. The first to third-place winners received medals and coaching money.
