The appointment of Professor Teuku Faisal Fathani as Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) marks a milestone in his long-standing contribution to disaster research.
The professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FT UGM) has dedicated over two decades to geotechnical studies, disaster mitigation, and the development of multi-hazard early warning systems.
His unwavering commitment to research and community service has earned him recognition as a scientist who bridges analytical rigor with social compassion.
In an interview, Professor Fathani shared that his research in disaster mitigation stems from a personal calling to deliver tangible benefits to society. Through various studies and the development of disaster detection instruments, he has sought to connect scientific innovation with field application.
His work has led to the creation of early warning systems implemented across Indonesia, serving as a model for international adaptation.
“Experience in developing multi-hazard early warning systems can strengthen BMKG’s disaster detection and mitigation capacity by improving accuracy, cross-sector collaboration, and community engagement,” he said on Wednesday (Nov. 5).
Professor Fathani believes that collaboration between researchers and policymakers is essential for building national disaster resilience. For him, disaster research should not end with academic publications. It must inform policies that directly impact people’s lives.
By integrating local knowledge with modern science, he hopes research outcomes can serve as a foundation for development that is resilient to natural risks.
“Collaboration between researchers and policymakers ensures that policies are evidence-based and relevant to the needs of society,” he explained.

Beyond his research endeavors, Professor Fathani has played a leading role in various national and international organizations in the field of disaster mitigation.
His leadership is reflected in his extensive experience, spanning roles such as Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UGM, as well as Vice President of the International Consortium on Geo-Disaster Reduction (ICGdR) and the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL).
These experiences have been instrumental in building a global network to enhance Indonesia’s disaster preparedness.
“Effective leadership is not defined by position, but by the ability to foster collaboration and deliver meaningful impact,” he emphasized.
Professor Fathani also encouraged the younger generation to play an active role in shaping a more adaptive, technology-driven future for disaster mitigation. He urged students and early-career researchers to develop innovations that address community needs while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
According to him, the field of disaster management demands lifelong learning and continuous cooperation.
“Study diligently, stay creative, and build partnerships with various stakeholders so that disaster research can bring real benefits,” he advised.
Professor M. Zudhy Irawan, a colleague from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, noted that Professor Fathani’s achievements reflect his exceptional ability to manage both academic and research institutions.
During his tenure as department chair (2021-2025), the department achieved the top ranking among Indonesian universities in Civil Engineering according to THE WUR 2025.
Professor Irawan praised Professor Fathani’s capacity for strategic decision-making and his success in integrating academic research with technological innovation in disaster studies.
“His decisive, results-oriented leadership reflects high integrity and a strong vision for advancing academic excellence and disaster research,” said Professor Irawan.
Professor Wahyu Wilopo, who has long known Professor Fathani, described him as a disciplined, resilient, and highly principled individual. He highlighted the newly appointed head’s consistent dedication to teaching, research, and community service, underscoring his empathy and professionalism.
“Professor Fathani is an active and dedicated educator and researcher. Firm, responsible, and deeply humanistic in his approach to work,” said Professor Wilopo.
As both a friend and colleague, Professor Wilopo expressed confidence that Professor Fathani will carry out his new responsibilities at BMKG with integrity and commitment.
He believes Professor Fathani’s combination of scientific expertise, leadership, and social awareness makes him an ideal figure to lead a national institution of BMKG’s stature.
“I am confident that with his competence and dedication, Professor Fathani will guide BMKG toward becoming an even more reliable and globally respected institution,” he affirmed.
