A team of UGM students has developed an innovative pill capsule product specifically designed for cats to facilitate the administration of solid medications.
Named Medi-Caps, these capsules are made from safe and pet-friendly materials, designed to reduce the risk of allergic reactions in cats and ensure the safety of long-term use.
“Administering medication to cats can be a challenging task for pet owners. Cats often refuse medication by vomiting, scratching, or biting their owners. This product is expected to help cat owners give medication more easily and safely,” explained Ainur Rohmah, the team leader.
Rohmah explained that Medi-Caps is designed to assist cat owners in caring for their pets’ health. Medication administration often causes stress to pets.
Medi-Caps capsules are designed to reduce this stress by providing a smoother and more comfortable medication administration for cats. Pet owners can incorporate solid medication into the capsule, and cats can consume it more easily.
These capsules contain 30-40% water content, which is better than typical dry food. Additionally, Medi-Caps have good palatability with particle sizes easily digestible by cats.
“Medi-Caps is a much-needed product in the world of cat medicine, which can reduce stress for both cats and their owners,” she said.
Rohmah developed this product along with four other students, namely Alvina Meita S., Devia Yolanda, Andin Wiranti, and Endah Ayu Kusuma W.
They are part of the Student Creativity Program (PKM) team, which receives funding support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. Throughout the research and product development process, this team was guided by veterinarian Nur Ika Prihanani.
