The Semar UGM Energy Efficient Electric Car team again succeeded at the prestigious Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and Middle East 2024. Held from July 2 to 6, 2024, at the Mandalika Circuit, West Nusa Tenggara, the Universitas Gadjah Mada team won two championship titles.
Shell Eco-marathon is a global competition for energy-efficient vehicles designed by students to promote sustainable transportation solutions. This year, over 75 teams from 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions, including Indonesia, Singapore, Korea, India, China, Malaysia, and Qatar, competed, increasing the intensity and excitement of the race.
In the prototype battery-electric category, Semar UGM demonstrated its expertise with an impressive efficiency of 903 km/kWh, securing second place.
They also participated in the hydrogen fuel cell category of the urban concept as the only representative from Indonesia, achieving an efficiency score of 178 km/m³. They won first place, beating teams from prestigious universities in Asia, such as KUST from South Korea, LH-EV from Vietnam, and UiTM from Malaysia.
Furthermore, Semar UGM also won first place in the off-track award for data and telemetry systems and secured third place in the regional championship.
This achievement marks not the end of Semar’s journey but a new beginning to reach higher accomplishments, especially next year when Semar plans to participate in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia Pacific and Middle East in Qatar.
Arkan Febian, Manager of Urban Hydroz 1.1, expressed satisfaction with his team’s outstanding performance. The Semar UGM team’s success culminates over a year of hard work and meticulous preparation.
“The team’s success is driven by solid teamwork because we rely on each other and our strong commitment to creating a sustainable future,” Febian said.
He added that, in addition to team collaboration, support from UGM and sponsors such as Bronkhorst and 18 other partners was crucial to their achievements.
Fikri Wahyudi, Head of the Semar UGM team, also expressed his happiness after winning the championship.
“From the beginning, we just focused on doing our best and eliminating worries in all areas. Our hard work finally paid off with a proud result. We hope this achievement can inspire other students to innovate in environmentally friendly technology,” Wahyudi said.
In this year’s competition, the Semar team comprised 22 students from the Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering (Faculty of Engineering/FT UGM), and Electronics and Instrumentation (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences/FMIPA UGM).
