The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (DTMI) at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), joined hands with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) for the Freshmore Asia Cross-curricular Trip (FACT) program, conducted from Jan. 2-13, 2024.
This edition of FACT honed in on two vital themes: modeling uncertainty and energy data collection, boasting participants from SUTD, DTMI, and the UGM Department of Chemical Engineering (DTK).
Breaking the mold of conventional classroom programs, this FACT initiative unfolded not just within the confines of lecture halls but spilled into the heart of the RW 05 community in Terban Village, Gondokusuman, Yogyakarta.
Dr. Lee Chee Huei, the representative from SUTD, remarked, “This event provides a good experience for students, allowing what is learned in the classroom to be applied effectively.”
The participants delved into hands-on activities, modeling the installation of solar panels to address uncertainties and, more impressively, installing solar panels coupled with an Internet of Things (IoT) system for energy data collection.
The solar panels designed and installed by these students are poised to illuminate the lives of the Terban Village community.
These sustainable energy sources will power lighting and sound systems for the mosque and meeting hall, propel water pumps, and contribute to the electricity needs of the wastewater treatment system.
“The community is thrilled to be a collaboration hub for UGM and SUTD, and we hope this program can continue because the community truly feels the benefits,” said the Head of RW 05, Supriyanto.
Post the solar installation, participants showcased their modeling results and shared reflections, with each topic seeing the selection of the best groups. Notably, the FACT program featured a collaboration with HCLTech–an Indian technology company that provides support in furnishing and installing solar panels alongside the IoT system.
The culmination of FACT 2024 unfolded at the Nidaul Jannah Mosque courtyard within RW 05 Terban Village. The event welcomed key figures such as Professor Sugeng Sapto Surjono, the Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs of the Faculty of Engineering, and representatives from SUTD, HCLTech, and DTMI.
The agenda included traditional dances, speeches, the official handover of solar panel facilities, recognition of outstanding groups, and the distribution of certificates.
