The UGM Women’s Association (DWP) conducted a pilgrimage and flower-laying ceremony at the Kusumanegara Heroes Cemetery and Sawitsari Cemetery to commemorate the 74th Anniversary of UGM on Friday, December 1.
At the Sawitsari Cemetery, the team laid flowers at the graves of former rectors such as Professor T. Jacob, whereas at the Kusumanegara, pilgrimage and flower-laying activities were performed at the graves of Professor Sardjito and Professor Herman Johannes.
The DWP Chair, Dr. Indun Dewi Puspita, said these routine activities are a form of respect for the former leaders of UGM and the national heroes who sacrificed their lives and souls to defend the Republic of Indonesia.
“We pay homage to the predecessors who have contributed to the establishment and development of UGM,” said Dr. Puspita in her statement to reporters on Monday (December 4).
Organized by the DWP ahead of UGM’s anniversary, this pilgrimage is intended to embrace the values of heroism and commemorate the contributions of the former UGM Rectors.
“These values are expected to inspire future generations to contribute, revitalize the spirit of nationalism, foster heroic values, and increase love for the homeland,” she said.
The DWP had previously conducted a visit to the homes of the families of former UGM Rectors, such as Mrs. Soekanto H. Reksohadiprodjo, Mrs. Ichlasul Amal, Mrs. Sofian Effendi, and Mr. and Mrs. Sudjarwadi.
Visiting the families of former Rectors has become a tradition for the DWP to strengthen the relationship between the families of the Rectors and the DWP officials. Moreover, the wives of former rectors were the chairs of DWP during their husbands’ tenure as rectors.
“This is a tribute to the contributions and roles of the former rectors and is expected to strengthen the bonds and add happiness to the former UGM leaders and their families,” she said.
