The exciting news comes from the PPK Ormawa Team of BEM KM FMIPA UGM. The Student Organization Capacity Building Program (PPK Ormawa) is a community service and empowerment program initiated, planned, and implemented by student organizations.
This PPK Ormawa program is supported by the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs, the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, and higher education institutions.
Through the BRICOFI program, the PPK Ormawa Team from BEM KM FMIPA UGM has secured funding from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education.
Led by Griselda Lituhayu Tetuko Jati, this program empowers the community by utilizing coconut waste to make briquettes, cocopeat, and coco fiber, supporting zero waste and the economy of Trenten Village.
The BRICOFI program includes 13 students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM), with direct guidance from Mokhammad Fajar Pradipta, a lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM).
Jati explained that Trenten is a village in the Candimulyo District, Magelang Regency, Central Java Province, covering an area of 375 hectares. The majority of this area is coconut plantation land.
Therefore, it is unsurprising that Trenten Village is known as a center for the coconut processing industry. This industry is supported by human resources in Trenten Village, who are members of farmer groups (Gapoktan).
“The coconuts used to leave behind waste in the form of coconut husks and shells, which pile up and cause an unpleasant odor. This condition also results in the soil becoming infertile due to the tannin substances in the coconut husks,” Jati said at UGM on Monday, Jul. 1, 2024.
Therefore, she said, the BRICOFI Program promoted by the PPK Ormawa Team from BEM KM FMIPA UGM aims to process coconut shell waste into briquettes, while coconut husk waste is processed into cocopeat and coco fiber.
“The program we offer supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 8, which is Decent Work and Economic Growth. Through this activity, we hope the community understands the program, feels ownership, and supports it,” Jati explained.
Furthermore, she explained that Trenten Village is 16.7 km from the city center of Magelang and 42.1 km from Universitas Gadjah Mada. Despite the distance, the spirit of service among the PPK Ormawa BEM KM FMIPA members remains undiminished.
She explained that the BRICOFI program was carefully planned, from budgeting to finding partner companies. BRICOFI members work together to implement a program that is not only profitable but also sustainable
This program ensures ongoing benefits with direct guidance from their supervising lecturer. It is expected to raise community awareness about the importance of zero waste and the potential of coconut processing waste.
The program begins with waste management, an introduction to zero waste, and training in processing waste into briquettes, cocopeat, and coco fiber (BRICOFI).
Business management and marketing training are also conducted to enhance the community’s ability to expand its target market and make marketing more effective.
