Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has achieved a proud accomplishment in the National Tea Festival competition, organized by the Indonesian Tea Association.
Through PT Pagilaran, a tea plantation and processing company owned by UGM, the university successfully won four awards.
These awards include 1st Place for the Broken Orange Pekoe (BOP) product category, 1st Place for Broken Orange Pekoe Fanning (BOPF) product category, 1st Place for Pekoe Fanning (PF), and 2nd Place for the DUST category.
The award ceremony was held on Thursday (May 22) as part of the Jogja Food & Beverage Expo 2025 at Jogja Expo Center (JEC), Yogyakarta.
PT Pagilaran competed against 18 state-owned and private companies with 91 tea samples entered in the competition.
The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Dr. Jaka Widada, welcomed the awards received by PT Pagilaran.
He stated that the recognition from the Indonesian Tea Association for their tea products was well-deserved.
“I believe this award is a form of recognition for the quality of tea produced by Pagilaran, which is one of UGM’s business units,” Dr. Widada said.
Dr. Widada revealed that the awards are proof of Pagilaran’s success in innovating and improving tea production processes, thus yielding high-quality products.
Furthermore, by providing high-quality products, UGM can contribute to the tea industry.
Dr. Widada explained that Pagilaran is one of the pioneers in the Indonesian tea industry. It has made a significant contribution to the development of the national tea industry.
He added that these awards further enhance UGM’s reputation as an educational institution that not only focuses on education but also has successful and innovative business units.
“The innovations carried out by Pagilaran are part of the downstream of research to the industry,” Dr. Widada stated.
Nevertheless, Dr. Widada hopes that this achievement will not make Pagilaran complacent. Instead, it should motivate them to continuously conduct research and innovation on tea products.
He aims for Pagilaran’s products to not only be a source of national pride but also competitive globally.
“This award can be a motivation for PT Pagilaran and UGM to continue making improvements and innovations to enhance product quality,” Dr. Widada hoped.
