Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) students have once again achieved remarkable success.
This time, a team of UGM students, comprising Muhammad Faris Khiar Calosa, Ridho Nur Alam, Irvan Khotibul Umam, Muhammad Syukur Shidiq, and Agus Syahputra, secured an award at the 2024 International Youth Summit (IYS).
The students, hailing from various faculties such as Biology, Cultural Science, Engineering, and Pharmacy, received recognition at the international essay and scientific presentation competition held by Universiti Putra Malaysia on Nov. 9-10, 2024.
In this prestigious event, the UGM team won a silver medal for their innovative work titled “Boba Bean: An Innovative Instant Red Bean Beverage for Anemia Prevention Among Adolescents.”
Boba Bean is a red bean-based nutritional solution specifically designed to prevent anemia among teenagers. This product combines natural ingredients like red beans, which are known for being rich in iron and essential for boosting daily iron intake.
The idea behind this innovation stemmed from the high prevalence of anemia in Indonesia, particularly among young women. Iron supplements or tablets are often deemed ineffective in fulfilling iron needs, as many people struggle to consume capsules.
“We wanted to create a more appealing alternative that fits the tastes of younger generations,” said Agus Syahputra on Monday (Dec. 23).
During the competition, the team had various new experiences, one of which was presenting their work before international judges and attendees.
They also showcased their product, a Boba Bean dish. The team explained their innovation and answered various questions in English.
“This was truly a valuable experience,” Syahputra shared.
International judges praised their scientific work for its creative approach and foundation in scientific research. The Boba Bean innovation also supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, which focuses on Good Health and Well-being.
“Through this nutritious and practical food solution, Boba Bean is expected to be an effective alternative for anemia prevention, which remains a global health issue,” he said.
Syahputra hopes that Boba Bean can be further developed and benefit society more broadly. Winning the silver medal at the 2024 International Youth Summit brought pride to UGM and inspired Indonesia’s younger generation to continue creating and innovating on the international stage.
“This success opens up opportunities for us to collaborate further in supporting the global health movement,” Syahputra concluded.
