The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMIPA UGM) held the FMIPA UGM Reunion Night 2024, part of the 69th-anniversary celebrations, on Saturday (Sep. 14) at the FMIPA UGM Auditorium.
This event aimed to reunite FMIPA UGM alumni and strengthen their connections while reminiscing about their time with the faculty.
From 6 PM until midnight, the evening featured various entertainment and culinary delights, such as Javanese noodles, cotton candy, and sweet treats. Alumni from various cohorts attended, and the Dean of FMIPA UGM, Professor Kuwat Triyana, expressed pride in their presence.
“Coming from all over Indonesia, including Jakarta and Nusa Tenggara, we are honored by the attendance of our senior alumni tonight.”
In line with the anniversary theme, “Innovation for Downstream: Realizing National Independence through Science and Technology,” Professor Triyana mentioned that FMIPA UGM has established a speed-up company as an incubator and accelerator that is expected to produce various startups in the future.
The event continued with performances, including creative dances, band performances by students and alumni, door prize distributions, quizzes, a choir, recognition for outstanding students, inspirational talks from alumni, and a ketoprak (traditional Javanese drama).
One of the highlights was the ketoprak titled “Suminten Bukan Siti Nurbaya,” which tells the story of Suminten (Bella, a Mathematics student at FMIPA UGM) being arranged to marry the elderly Den Mono (Professor Harno Dwi Pranowo), who has four wives.
However, Suminten has a boyfriend and wants to pursue her master’s degree at FMIPA UGM first, a plan initially opposed by her father (Professor Triyana), who ultimately relents upon understanding her intentions.
In a unique conclusion to the performance, all attendees and cast members lit their phone flashlights while singing “Happy Birthday” to Professor Triyana, whose birthday coincided with the event.
