The 2022 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings have ranked Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) among the top three green and sustainable campuses in Indonesia, along with Universitas Indonesia and Diponegoro University, and placed the university in 34th position in the world.

“UGM is committed to implementing sustainability in various aspects of campus management to achieve the university’s vision and mission of caring for the sustainability of our Earth in the future,” said Secretary to the UGM Rector, Dr. Wirastuti Widyatmanti, on Wednesday (14/12).

“While the results of this assessment are quite good, we have also prepared a range of strategic steps to ensure that environmental sustainability development and improvement of the quality of human resources occur in a comprehensive and balanced manner.”

She added that UGM actively voiced concern for climate change issues and promoted environmentally friendly behavior in the community.

“As a higher education institution, UGM plays an important role as a driver of change and a pioneer in realizing a sustainable planet through green governance, green economy, and the use of green energy and materials,” she said.

UI GreenMetric World University Rankings rank world universities based on their efforts in implementing environmentally friendly and sustainable programs. These campuses are assessed against 39 indicators and six criteria, i.e., Setting and Infrastructure (SI), Energy and Climate Change (EC), Waste (WS), Water (WR), Transportation (TR), and Education (ED).

Its participants soared from 956 universities from 80 countries in 2021 to 1,050 universities from 85 countries this year. In Indonesia alone, as many as 126 universities participated in the rankings.
