The Webometrics placed UGM as the only Indonesian university in its Asian Top 100 list, placing UGM in the 72th. Meanwhile, the top three big universities in Indonesia were UGM ( Universitas Gadjah Mada ), ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology) and UI ( University of Indonesia) in the South East Asian Top 100 list.
UGM rank this time decreased than that in January 2009, which was on the 64th. This is common because of the fluctuation.
According to the Head of UGM Public Relations and Protocol, Suryo Baskoro, UGM ranks in Webometrics Asian Top 100 was dynamic. In 2006 UGM was 100th, 2007 was 95th, in January 2008 was 57th, July 2008 was 74th, and January 2009 was 64th.
“For this Asian Top 100, UGM was the only Indonesia University to be among the list, while for the South Asian Top 100, UGM was the 8th, ITB the 13th, and UI the 21st, followed by several Indonesian Universities such as Christian Petra University , Gunadarma University and UNS ( Sebelas Maret University ),†Suryo said at UGM, Thursday (30/7)
To respond the Webometrics rank gained by UGM, Suryo explained the grading by Webometrics based on superiority of e- publication on web domain of every university. The measurement used 4 indicators; Size (S) or the amount of electronic publication pages at University web domain; Visibility (V) or the amount of others pages attached to the URL domain of University being assessed; Rich Files (RF), or the relevance of electronic source between academic activities and those University publication; and Scholar (Sc), or the amount of qualified publication and citation at University domain.
“The data which were collected by 4 indicators were analyzed and used to grade approximately 4.000 Universities from all over the world. The University ranking list issued twice a year in January and July,†he explained.
According to Suryo, the Webometrics rank was not actually the aim of UGM today because UGM more focused on the use of information and communication technology to disseminate the works of academic community in giving solution of problems faced by the nation. UGM would always increase the website uploading of lecturer’s works so they are not only read by the people but also referred to by many Indonesian and international experts.
“Once again, this shows that electronic publication at site http://www.ugm.ac.id is assessed as the most comprehensive and richest in this country,†he explained and also hoped that in the future the quality and quantity of UGM electronic publication would be better.
