YOGYAKARTA- UGM Faculty of Biology continues to increase the number of research in several sites owned by Biological Garden, Museum of Biology as well as Sawitsari Field Station. One is conducting research through research project grants funded from Indonesia Managing Higher Education for Relevance and Efficiency (I-MHERE).

According to Dr. Budi S. Daryono, M.Agr.Sc., the PIC of I-MHERE program activity 2.1.2 Faculty of Biology, in 2010 and 2011 some preliminary activities had been done from staff/ employees training to complementing and enhancing existing facilities.

"For example, staff training at Museum of Biology, collection of seeds and plants as well as painting and improving facilities at Sawitsari Field Station," Budi said in the Socialization Grant on Biodiversity to Improve Quality and the Use of the Arboretum, Museum of Biology & Sawitsari Field Station, in Faculty of Biology, Friday (3/2). The event was attended by graduate students and lecturers of Faculty of Biology.

Budi, who was accompanied by Dr. Endang Semiarti, M.S., M.Sc., coordinator of PIC I-MHERE in Faculty of Biology, and Drs. Sutikno, S.U, team leader of activity 2.1.4, explained that the research designed for S2 and S3 students of Faculty of Biology should be in line with the thesis or dissertation which is being compiled.

"The result is expected to include any additional collection in Biological Garden, Museum of Biology or Sawitsari Field Station," he added.

The budget provided for six winners of the research proposal, Budi said, maximally is 20 million rupiah each. To select proposals will involve three reviewers from Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Forestry.

Previously, Dean of Faculty of Biology, Dr. Retno Peni Sancayaningsih, M.Sc., said that year 2012 is the last year for I-MHERE program. Many programs in researches have been running that provide benefits to UGM and the community. He hoped that even though the I-MHERE program ends, research remains to be improved later.

"In addition, we hope all research of graduate students of Faculty of Biology could also be published in national and international journals," Peni said.
