The UGM Faculty of Agriculture has collaborated with the Berau Regency Government over the past five years to implement the Sigap Sejahtera Program (PSS).
The program focuses on the intensification and downstream of agricultural products to improve the welfare of farmers in various villages in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan.
The head of the PSS Berau team from the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Arman Wijonarko, stated that the program has conducted various activities, including cocoa cultivation, freshwater fisheries development, and pepper and corn cultivation.
“For cocoa, we have successfully created model gardens and chocolate production houses under the brand Kulanta. We also have freshwater fisheries with catfish farming, as well as pepper and corn plantations, to support animal feed,” said Dr. Wijonarko in his statement to the press on Monday (Jan. 22).
In addition to agricultural assistance, the team promotes programs to improve village governance, natural resource management, and village economic empowerment.
“Currently, the programs we initiated are being continued by Berau’s human resources. We are trying to replicate this program in North Kutai and areas in North Kalimantan,” he added.
Meanwhile, Berau Regent Sri Juniarsih Mas mentioned that the Sigap Sejahtera Program is one of the collaborative results between the Berau Regency Government and various parties, including UGM.
According to her, the program has been running for five years, has positively impacted Berau Regency’s progress, and will accelerate development in the coming years.
“Collaborative work has been the spirit behind various achievements of Berau Regency, including the active participation of Sigap members in all villages,” she explained.
