The Provincial Government of Central Java has designated Kadilanggon Village, Klaten, as a Food Self-Sufficiency Area. This is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen food security through agriculture and livestock, which are potential resources already present in the village.
Unfortunately, the natural resources of Kadilanggon Village have not been optimally utilized.
The establishment of the village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) Putra Manggolo aims to maximize the potential in agriculture and livestock by developing a sheep farming business under the “Sheep Village” program.
This initiative aims to improve the local sheep farming industry, enhancing the community’s welfare.
Since 2023, the UGM Faculty of Animal Science (Animal Science UGM) has initiated an assistance program for Sheep Village to help create food security and boost the local economy.
Dr. Muhsin Al Anas, a lecturer and the Head of the Livestock Development Center at Animal Science UGM, explained that his team has developed two main programs to establish a self-sustaining sheep village.
First, they will develop fodder crop areas and build a concentrated feed factory.
“Feed is the foundation of livestock farming because it relates to optimal productivity and business efficiency,” Dr. Anas explained in an online interview on Tuesday (Oct. 1).
In addition, UGM’s team is assisting in establishing a concentrated feed factory managed by BUMDes Putra Manggolo, with a production capacity of 50-75 tons per month.
Currently, feed production and sales range between 40 and 60 tons per month. The factory provides high-quality feed accessible to sheep farmers, helping to increase livestock productivity.
“This feed factory has provided job opportunities for the local community and supports the self-sufficiency of Sheep Village,” said the Biochemistry Nutrition lecturer.
Dr. Anas explained that the second program involves developing a core-plasma partnership model between BUMDes and farmers.
BUMDes serves as the core entity, supplying sheep for fattening and feeding during the three-month maintenance period and managing assistance to partner farmers. It also acts as the off-taker to purchase the livestock at harvest.
“Farmers’ roles include providing pens and fodder areas for sheep farming. This program has been running for two periods and has already brought profits to the farmers,” Dr. Anas added.
BUMDes Putra Manggolo is committed to becoming a driving force in building sustainable food security in Kadilanggon Village while also improving the community’s welfare through livestock farming.
Imam Adi Prayogo, Director of BUMDes, stated that the concentrated feed factory is crucial in supporting the sheep fattening partnership model developed through the core plasma system.
He believes this partnership will increase livestock productivity and farmers’ profits.
Sri Agung Suko Wijoyo, Head of Kadilanggon Village, expressed his support for the Sheep Village Program, which harnesses the village’s potential. They fully support the Sheep Village program as a concrete step toward utilizing the village’s potential.
Wijoyo hopes that this program will make Kadilanggon Village a model of food self-sufficiency in Central Java.
To maximize the results of the Sheep Village program, Dr. Anas has also collaborated with Priyonggo Suseno, a lecturer from the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), who provides guidance on product marketing and financial management for BUMDes.
“We offer comprehensive assistance, from farming practices and capital management to sales,” Dr. Anas concluded.
