The Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) at UGM embodies the university’s commitment to societal progress.
This time, the KKN-PPM team from Karangkobar shares its narrative of uplifting livestock potential in Leksana Village, Karangkobar District, Banjarnegara Regency.
In Leksana Village, locals often grapple with undernourished livestock prone to illnesses and poor productivity. This situation hampers farmers from realizing their full potential.
Undeterred, the Karangkobar team embraced the challenge wholeheartedly upon discovering the village’s untapped resources. Following consultations with the livestock community, the team introduced mineral blocks as a remedy for nutritional deficiencies in livestock.
Mineral blocks, recognized as supplementary feed enriched with vital minerals and vitamins, are hailed for stimulating appetite and mitigating mineral deficiencies.
The team provided comprehensive guidance for farmer and livestock groups, stressing the pivotal role of mineral blocks in enhancing livestock nutrition. This intervention aims to bolster livestock production, serving as the backbone of the community’s income.
“We deeply appreciate the mineral block introduction conducted by the KKN team in our area, as it significantly aids farmers in optimizing their potential and honing their skills,” remarked Retno Sulistyowati, an official from the Agricultural Extension Center (BPP) of Karangkobar.
The Technical Guidance on Mineral Block Making, held on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, in Karangkobar, garnered remarkable enthusiasm from the community. Participants hailed from livestock groups across six villages, including Leksana Village, Gumelar Village, Purwodadi Village, Binangun Village, Karangkobar Village, and Sampang Village.
The guidance entailed a step-by-step explanation highlighting the significance of mineral blocks, followed by hands-on sessions where the community crafted their blocks, empowering them for the future.
According to the UGM team, the people of Karangkobar possess innate skills and insights into livestock management. This was evident in the lively discussions and interactive Q&A sessions with the students.
Intriguingly, some residents expressed interest in transforming their newfound knowledge into a business venture after mastering the art of crafting mineral blocks. This initiative deepened the community’s understanding of livestock management and spurred them to view it as a potential economic avenue.
Often, the potential of rural communities remains untapped due to resource and knowledge limitations. Hence, the UGM KKN-PPM strives to empower communities, fostering sustainability.
