Four students from the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), competing as Tim Jaya Consulting, successfully secured the title of 1st Runner-Up in the HSBC Indonesia Business Case Competition 2025.
The prestigious event, held in Jakarta from Apr. 26–29, 2025, brought together 24 teams from leading universities across Indonesia.
Tim Jaya Consulting comprises four students from the 2022 batch of the Management Program: Vittorio Valero Salim, Michael Handoyo, Risang Mar’atun Sholihah, and Darwin Tandjo. They were mentored by Azellia Alma Shafira.
The HSBC Indonesia Business Case Competition is an annual event organized by PT Bank HSBC Indonesia in collaboration with the Putera Sampoerna Foundation.
Team leader Vittorio Valero Salim explained that the competition posed unique challenges not typically found in other contests.
A key challenge was for teams to develop a business deck within three hours without internet access and then present it immediately to a panel of judges.
“This naturally made our training process very intense, as we had to simulate the real conditions as closely as possible,” said Salim at FEB UGM on Wednesday (May 7).
Tim Jaya Consulting had to progress through three stages to achieve its victory.
In the first round, they tackled a case related to finance and investment strategies ahead of a company’s Initial Public Offering (IPO), which was followed by a presentation.
“Although we experienced a bit of a shock, fortunately, Tim Jaya Consulting quickly adapted and made it to the next round,” said Salim.
In the second round, the team presented the same business deck to a different panel of judges.
They prepared more intensively for this stage with their mentor, Azellia Alma Shafira, and Dr. Rijadh Djatu Winardi.
The semifinal round focused on a marketing-related case and was among the most anticipated by participants due to its higher probability of advancing to the final.
Salim described the final round as the most emotional moment for all competing teams.
In this decisive round, the finalists were tasked with solving a case on acquisition negotiations and public perception management.
He admitted that the team felt slightly dissatisfied with their performance in the final.
Nevertheless, Tim Jaya Consulting was surprised when the results were announced, naming them the 1st Runner-Up.
“It was quite shocking to receive the judges’ trust as the 1st Runner-Up. For me, this achievement is not only about the competition itself, but also about how our mentality and readiness were tested in facing real-world corporate issues,” said Salim.
He noted that time constraints were a major challenge during their preparation.
However, with careful scheduling, the team could prioritize effectively and manage efficient training sessions.
“It seems that mental strength and mutual trust among team members were key to facing every stage of this competition,” he added.
In addition to intensive mentoring and training, Tim Jaya Consulting also received support from FEB UGM’s Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU), which provided public speaking training, case analysis workshops, and materials related to business and finance.
They also received guidance from HSBC managerial staff members Irine Wiguno and Yohana Maurenneta.
Salim shared that the entire team is grateful for the accomplishment.
He believes that confidence, the courage to go through the process, and stepping out of one’s comfort zone are crucial ingredients for achieving extraordinary outcomes.
“This competition proves that success is not only about achievements, but also about gaining experience, making new friends, and learning new perspectives,” he said.
Shafira, their mentor, praised the team’s accomplishment as the result of hard work and strong dedication.
She noted that the students underwent intensive preparation while receiving guidance from experienced mentors.
“Even though their training coincided with the Eid holidays and midterms, they remained highly dedicated to joining HSBC mentoring, public speaking training, and coaching sessions on sharpening theories with FEB lecturers. Their perseverance, combined with a strong support system, laid the foundation for their victory,” she explained.
