Another national achievement has been snatched by Universitas Gadjah Mada’s students of Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business. Samuel Edwardo, third-year student, won a first place in Deloitte Tax Challenge competition and will represent Indonesia in ASEAN Deloitte Tax Challenge in Kuala Lumpur, from February 25th-26th, 2016. Meanwhile, a team consisted of Angela Yona (Accounting 2012), Johannes Juan (Accounting 2012), Achmad Masyhadul Amin (Accounting 2012), and Karina Paramitha (Accounting 2012) made it to second place on the Team Category.

The Head of Accounting Department UGM, Mahfud Solihin, Ph.D., explained that Deloitte Tax Challenge 2016 is the first tax competition held by one of the biggest public accountant office which is Deloitte Indonesia. The competition is separated to two categories which are Individual and Team categories.

“The competition was started by selecting the documents submitted by participants. The successful participants will be invited to compete directly in the office of Deloitte Indonesia on January 13th, 2016,” Mahfud said, Tuesday (9/2).

The participants came from various universities, such as Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Bina Nusantara, Universitas Padjajaran, Trisakti School of Management, Universitas Brawijaya, and UGM. The participants faced tax cases related to Indonesia and the world. The task must be done in 3 hours. The result of the case discussion must be presented in powerpoint or paper form. The participants had to present their analysis for 10 minutes in front of 3 panelists, who are partners and directors of Deloitte Tax Solutions.

“From the elimination round, four individual participants and five team participants made it to the next round on February 3rd, 2016 in the office of Deloitte Indonesia Office in Jakarta,” he explained.

He said that the finalk competition was similar to the elimination round but the discussion was limited to 1,5 hours. The presentation time was given for 25 minutes which consisted of 15 minutes of presentation and 10 minutes of Q&A session. The panelist of the final round were Managing Partner, Senior Partner, National Leader of Deloitte Indonesia, who are Melisa Himawan, Firdaus Asikin, and Mr. Carlo Navarro.

“This proves that Department of Accounting UGM is the best Accounting Department in Indonesia that deserved accreditation from Association to Advance Collegiate of Schools of Business (AACSB),” he added.
