Dean of UGM Graduate School, Prof. Ir. Siti Malkhamah, M.Sc., Ph.D., said in the course of study, graduate students are expected to balance academic duties and activities to train their softskills. This can be done by getting oneself involved in an organisation.
“I would like to remind the graduate students that amidst your active involvement in the organisation, don’t forget to make achievement academically,” she said in the Merapi Auditorium at Faculty of Geography UGM on Monday (13/11) when opening the 11th convention of Association of Graduate Students UGM from 13-15 November 2017.
Siti Malkamah believed the birth of successful leaders started from their time when they became students and got involved in an organisation while also making academic achievements. She added the presence of the Association serves as the forum for all student activities.
The event went with a Stadium General themed Reconceptualisation of Fighting Spirit of Heroes for Youth and Leadership which presented speakers Prof. Dr. Inu Kencana Syafiie, M.Si (former Rector of Universitas Pandanaran Semarang) and I Made Andi Arsana, ST., M.E., Ph.D (Indonesian delegate in the UN for World Maritime). There were also plenary sessions and election of Association chairperson for the period of 2018.
Inu Kencana Syafiie reminded the students to behave carefully, to refrain from acting smart, and to accept, analyse and understand things well.
“Morality, science and art are a unity that has to be owned by people in their lives. Science is to see what’s right from wrong, morality what’s good from bad, and arts are to perfect the science and morality,” he said.
In the event, the association finally elected Zaidan Zikri Malem from Geography study programme new chairman of the association, beating competitors Abdi Rahman Harahap and Azzuhfi Ilan Tinasar.
