In the current landscape, leaders grapple with unprecedented challenges, navigating through myriad dilemmas and uncertainties in decision-making.
Society is entrenched in the VUCA era—an acronym encapsulating volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.
It’s an epoch characterized by swift and unpredictable transformations, primarily fueled by rapid technological advancements and information dissemination.
These insights were shared by Yauri Gautama Putra Tetanel, an alumnus of the Department of Fisheries within the Faculty of Agriculture at UGM, during a Leadership Lecture hosted on Saturday (Mar. 16). The lecture captivated undergraduate students from the 2021 cohort.
Drawing from his expertise as a consultant for the Indonesian Partnership Committee for Poverty Alleviation, Yauri Tetanel enlightened the students about the disruptive dynamics unfolding in agriculture amidst the VUCA era.
He underscored the phenomenon where traditional agricultural paradigms are being upended by the advent and integration of modern agricultural practices, particularly with the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT).
“The VUCA era poses formidable challenges for leaders. Notably, the surge in IoT adoption within modern agriculture necessitates leaders swCiftly acclimating to new technologies once deemed unimaginable in their vision as leaders,” elaborated Tetanel.
He stressed the imperative for leaders to fulfill their quintessential roles in fostering the welfare of their constituents, notwithstanding the challenges encountered.
These pivotal roles encompass effective communication of a vision, adept decision-making, optimal resource utilization, performance evaluation, and adept conflict management.
As a proponent of community empowerment, he underscored the holistic skill set requisite for effective leadership, encompassing technical skills and a nuanced understanding of the social environment.
“I see a future leader needing a high level of sensitivity to the social environment, especially for my fellow students at the Faculty of Agriculture who will become future leaders in agrarian society,” he remarked.
