Dozens of students organized a campus clean-up over two days, Oct. 26-27, in the Bulaksumur and Sekip areas, equipped with brooms, garbage bags, and stackable compost bins for organic waste processing.
This student initiative, part of the Campus Service program, is a routine activity before students begin the Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) in various regions across Indonesia.
In this year’s Campus Service event, UGM students engaged in community clean-ups. They launched an outreach campaign introducing innovation for organic waste processing.
This innovation, which uses stackable compost bins, was developed by UGM lecturer Nasih Widya Yuwono. Each participating KKN team was tasked with raising awareness and engaging residents near campus to learn about organic waste management through this technology.
Dr. Rustamaji, Director of Community Service at UGM, hopes the students will promote using stackable compost bins to turn organic waste into fertilizer that enriches plants.
“This technology is utilized here and distributed to various regions to address waste management and organic recycling. As this becomes fertilizer, it will further strengthen Indonesia’s food security,” Dr. Rustamaji explained on Saturday (Oct. 26).
The waste management outreach also received positive feedback from students. Ahmad Rosyid Husnayain from the UGM Vocational College (SV UGM) expressed hopes that introducing this waste processing technology will reduce the amount of trash going to landfills.
“By recycling certain types of waste, we hope to minimize the waste produced, decreasing the accumulation at the final disposal sites,” he said.
The secretary of the UGM Directorate of Community Service, Professor Nanung Agus Fitriyanto, explained that students participating in the two-day Campus Service had the opportunity to conduct waste processing outreach and help educate the local community.
“The KKN students we’re sending out today can introduce the stackable compost bin technology. We hope this will provide residents with effective education on managing household organic waste,” he stated.
