In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Poland, the Library and Archives of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) welcomed a visit from the Embassy of the Republic of Poland on Thursday, Apr. 10, 2025.
This visit reflects both countries’ shared commitment to strengthening collaboration in the fields of education and culture.
The visit was led by Barbara Szymanowska, the Polish Ambassador to Indonesia, representatives from the Polish Embassy in Jakarta, and three Polish students currently studying in Yogyakarta.
The delegation also included the Wielkopolska regional delegation led by Marshal Marek Wozniak and the Poland-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group headed by Krzysztof Gadowski, MP, along with six other members.
In his remarks, Gadowski expressed that the Polish delegation’s visit demonstrated a commitment to deepening cooperation between Poland and UGM.
Proposed initiatives included opening a Polish language course at UGM and donating Polish-themed reading materials to the UGM Library and Archives.
“We hope to open a Polish language course and expand the collection of books about Poland here,” he stated.
Arif Surachman, Head of UGM Library and Archives, conveyed his appreciation for the Polish government’s attention and willingness to visit the UGM campus.
“Last year, we received several book titles from the Polish Embassy, and today, we are delighted to welcome another donation. These will certainly become valuable additions to our library collection,” he said.
Regarding the plan to open a Polish language course at UGM, Surachman affirmed that the idea would be forwarded to the university leadership for further consideration.
“We will submit this proposal to the university leaders for deeper follow-up,” he explained.
After discussing the collection and services of the UGM Library and Archives and providing general information about UGM, the visit concluded with a symbolic handover of books from the Polish delegation to the UGM Library and Archives.
The donated books covered topics such as Polish history, language, culture, and contemporary life.
The Polish delegates also had the opportunity to tour several of the library’s leading facilities and services.
