To raise public awareness of the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment, a KKN-PPM UGM (Universitas Gadjah Mada’s community service program) team organized a joint waste-sorting activity with the residents of Kadisoro Village, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region.
According to team member Salsa Fathiyah Hanim, the activity was part of their main environmental program.
She explained that in recent years, this practice has become a routine activity carried out by the community as a form of commitment to cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
“Household waste is sorted into three main categories: organic, inorganic, and residual waste. Inorganic waste is then delivered to the waste bank for recycling,” Hanim said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug. 20).
Hanim added that the KKN-PPM students not only accompanied the residents but also conducted data collection and evaluated the waste-sorting process that had been implemented so far.
“Afterwards, students introduced a more structured and efficient waste-sorting system,” she noted.
The activity began in the morning at several neighborhood association (RT) points.
Residents actively brought sorted waste from their homes to designated collection points.
The students then assisted with the sorting process while also providing additional education on waste types that were often misclassified.
One of the community leaders, Rini Purnama, expressed that the presence of UGM students brought new energy to the residents.
“We have already been used to sorting waste every week. But with the students here, we feel even more enthusiastic. We also learned many new things from them,” she said.
Through this synergy between the community and the students, Hilda Bhakti Fahrezi, another member, hoped that Kadisoro Village could become a model for building a culture of independent waste sorting and management.
“This collaboration shows that when education, consistency, and the spirit of mutual cooperation come together, positive environmental change can truly be achieved,” she concluded.
