The Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental sustainability through various eco-friendly initiatives. As a concrete step in this direction, FEB UGM is currently constructing 17 infiltration wells within the campus area. Ten of the wells are being built in the FEB UGM plaza to collect rainwater that falls on the grounds, while the remaining seven are connected to the drainage system of buildings, capturing both rainwater and water from air-conditioning systems.
Dean of FEB UGM, Professor Didi Achjari, explained that the construction of infiltration wells is a strategic measure for water conservation.
He said that this initiative will later be expanded to the study programs within FEB UGM.
“This program is part of FEB UGM’s ‘save water’ spirit, namely returning rainwater and water from the air-conditioning process back into the ground as an ecological responsibility and a real contribution to preserving water resources in the campus area,” he stated at FEB UGM on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025.
Dean Achjari noted that the construction of these infiltration wells represents FEB UGM’s support for the UGM Green Campus program, which focuses on natural resource efficiency and sustainable environmental management.
FEB UGM aims to create a campus environment that is not only comfortable for learning and working, but also contributes directly to environmental sustainability.
“These infiltration wells are a long-term ecological investment for the campus and community,” he said.
Aside from reducing the potential for water pooling and flooding during the rainy season, the presence of infiltration wells is expected to help maintain the stability of groundwater reserves and assist in the natural absorption of water.
With the construction of these wells, FEB UGM is striving to minimize surface water runoff while also aiming to enhance groundwater reserves.
“Through the ‘save water’ programme, we hope to inspire the academic community and the broader society to actively participate in environmental sustainability, starting from simple but impactful steps like water conservation. We believe that protecting the earth can begin in our own yard. Saving water is a simple yet meaningful way for a greener future,” he added.
