A scholar from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has once again demonstrated international engagement by contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change.
A lecturer from the UGM Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Hanifrahmawan Sudibyo, has been officially appointed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a Lead Author for the “Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories”.
Speaking to reporters on Monday (Feb. 9), Dr. Sudibyo stated that the role represents a scientific mandate carrying significant responsibility, particularly in addressing climate change. The IPCC Methodology Report will serve as a reference for many countries; therefore, the methodologies developed must be scientifically robust and practically applicable.
“The preparation of this methodology report is managed by the IPCC and will become a reference for various countries in compiling national greenhouse gas inventories,” he said.
According to him, the IPCC methodology report is highly technical and operational for participating countries and has become a reference for many others.
“The methodology report is used by various countries as a reference for reporting greenhouse gas inventories, making scientific consistency and clarity essential,” he explained.
In the preparation of the report, Dr. Sudibyo was entrusted with the topic of “Soil-based Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR)” within the agriculture, forestry, and other land use sectors, which are considered to play a strategic role in climate change mitigation efforts, particularly in relation to inventory development, mitigation measures, and the enhancement of global greenhouse gas absorption.
“The soil-based CDR approach is highly dependent on land management, agricultural, and forestry practices that vary across countries,” he noted.
Dr. Sudibyo acknowledged that becoming a lead author required undergoing a rigorous selection process conducted by the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI). The selection considered various aspects, including scientific expertise, research track record, and geographic and gender balance.
From the entire selection process for the IPCC methodology report, only two researchers from Indonesia were selected as Lead Authors, one of whom was himself. For him, this achievement represents international recognition of the scientific capacity of Indonesian academics, particularly from UGM, while also strengthening Indonesia’s involvement in global, science-based climate change discourse.
Moreover, Dr. Sudibyo’s achievement reinforces Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM)’s commitment to science diplomacy and enhances Indonesian academics’ contributions to global climate policy formulation.
Such involvement also encourages the development of evidence-based agricultural and land management policies, both through international forums and national policymaking, in addressing the challenges of climate change.
