A warm and convivial atmosphere marked the Syawalan gathering of the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) extended family at the Balairung on Monday (March 30). Since 7 in the morning, university leaders, lecturers, administrative staff, and students had gathered and mingled in a shared space. The interactions reflected the close bonds nurtured within the campus community. This moment also signaled the resumption of activities following the Eid al-Fitr holiday break.
UGM Rector, Professor Ova Emilia, greeted members of the UGM community attending the event. Professor Ova emphasized that Syawalan serves as a source of momentum, bringing renewed spirit to the performance of each individual’s role at work. Her presence among the academic community further reinforced the sense of togetherness that had been felt since the beginning of the event.
“Syawalan provides a space to reconnect and strengthen solidarity after observing Ramadan,” she said.
The Syawalan tradition at UGM has long been an integral part of campus life, preserved across generations. The event is understood as a space to foster closer relationships among members of the UGM community. A sense of kinship was evident in interactions that took place regardless of rank or unit. Many participants took the opportunity to reconnect and share stories after the long holiday.

As academic and administrative activities resume, the spirit of togetherness remains. Syawalan brings positive energy that is expected to carry forward into various upcoming agendas. Mutual respect and care remain essential values in performing daily responsibilities. The warm interactions reflect an inclusive work culture within the campus environment.
Through Syawalan, UGM reaffirms its commitment to fostering an inclusive and harmonious academic environment. This tradition represents part of the university’s efforts to uphold human values in everyday campus life. With a warm, friendly atmosphere, the event proceeded smoothly to its conclusion. Members of the UGM community then returned to their respective units with renewed enthusiasm.
“May this togetherness serve as a foundation for facing future challenges with greater unity,” the Rector concluded.
