As many as 150 researchers and academicians in civil engineering from various parts of the world attended the 1st Internasional Sustainable Civil Engineering Structures and Construction Materials at UGM. The event held by Civil Engineering and Environment UGM along with Hokkaido University, Japan and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, lasted for three days from 11-13 September 2012 at the University Center (UC) UGM.

The Seminar that much discusses the latest development in civil engineering present three main speakers, Prof. Harald S Mueller, KIT, Prof. Bambang Suhendro, UGM, and Prof. Tamon UEDA, Hokkaido University. As many as 70 papers are also presented here, 25 of which were written by researchers from 13 countris., including the U.S., the UK, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Singapore.

Chairman of the Conference, Prof. Bambang Suhendro, said that the role of civil engineering needs to be enhanced in sustainable development which is environmentally friendly. Sustainable development concept has gradually been in place in various aspects of civil engineering structure although in small number. “We have adequate human resource and material, but do not pay enough attention to the effect in the environment, such as in the design making, construction and maintenance of each civil engineering structure.

Bambang hoped that solutions and recommendations for policy can be obtained from the seminar in terms of engineering issues on civil structure and sustainable construction material. The seminar is also expected to be able to build networking and share knowledge and experience related to latest research findings in the civil engineering world that is constantly developing.

Apart from the seminar, participants are scheduled to join a technical tour to Borobudur and Kraton Yogyakarta.
