The rising issue of plastic waste in Indonesia and inadequate waste management highlights the need for innovative packaging solutions to minimize plastic use.
A group of students from Universitas Gadjah Mada, participating in the Student Creativity Program in Entrepreneurship (PKM-K), has successfully developed biodegradable pouches made from rice husk and cassava peel. This alternative packaging is environmentally friendly and effective in reducing plastic waste.
The team, guided by Dr. Annie Mufyda Rahmatika, includes Ananda Mutiara Dewi (Agricultural Product Development, 2022), Adinda Indriani Ayu Rizqi (Agricultural Product Development, 2022), Rizqina Zukhrufi Ilma (Agricultural Product Development, 2022), Oudy Nur Syafitri (Agricultural Product Development, 2023), and Vanya Khairunnisa (Food Technology and Agricultural Products, 2023).
“Casspa Pouch is recyclable, does not contribute to waste buildup, and avoids environmental damage,” said Mutiara Dewi in a press release on Monday (Aug. 5).
Dewi explained that cassava peel and rice husk contain nutrients beneficial for plant growth and soil fertility, allowing Casspa Pouch to be repurposed as fertilizer or growing medium.
The pouch’s unique design includes a handle, making it more flexible, comfortable, and easy to carry. Additionally, Casspa Pouch offers customizable stickers and decorative ribbons. Another advantage of Casspa Pouch is its resistance to water and oil due to the bioplastic coating made from rice husk.
“The bioplastic in Casspa Pouch protects water and oil, minimizing environmental impact,” Dewi added.
The pouch includes a barcode linking to a guide on converting it into fertilizer after use to assist consumers. The eco-friendly packaging solution boosts businesses’ profit and reputation and adds social and environmental value.
Dr. Rahmatika stated, “We aim to offer unique functional and aesthetic advantages with this eco-friendly pouch, combining cassava starch’s thermoplastic properties and rice husk’s strength. We hope Casspa Pouch becomes an ideal choice for innovative and sustainable packaging.”
