Students from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) have once again achieved a remarkable national accomplishment.
This time, the UGM team won several awards at the 2024 National University Debating Championship (NUDC), organized by the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas) under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. The event was held on Saturday (Jun 1) at Universitas Terbuka, Yogyakarta.
The UGM delegation brought home five prestigious awards. These awards were earned by Brian Hose Antonio Hambur from the Management program at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM) and Jason Valentino Samvero from the Faculty of Law (FH UGM), who won the Roderick Sibarani Award.
This award is given to the team that accumulates the highest Victory Points and speaker scores during the preliminary rounds. Additionally, Brian Hambur was named the 1st Best Overall Speaker, Jason the 2nd Best Overall Speaker, and Yehezkiel Vito from the International Relations program at the UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM) as the 4th Best N1 Adjudicator.
Brian Hose Antonio Hambur expressed his joy and pride in being one of the national achievers. “This skill needs to be honed and developed to advance to the next stage, namely international competitions,” Hambur said in a statement sent to journalists on Thursday (Jun 6).
According to Hambur, this achievement results from hard work and continuous practice amidst a busy academic schedule. He noted that winning the 2024 NUDC requires debating skills, strategy, and an understanding of the topics discussed.
“Every participant must understand various topics, including national issues related to the economy, culture, and education,” he said.
He feels fortunate that UGM consistently supports students’ interests and talents in debating, one way being through the Gadjah Mada Debating Society (GMDS).
The NUDC is a national-level university debate competition attended by 112 public and private universities from all over Indonesia. This prestigious event will select winners to represent Indonesia at the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC), which will be held later this year.
