The Faculty of Animal Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (Animal Science UGM), in collaboration with Polbangtan Malang and Burja Farm, has agreed to develop Awassi sheep. Awassi is the most common breed of sheep found in Middle Eastern countries and is the only native breed in Jordan, known for its production of meat, milk, and wool.
The collaboration is being carried out through research and community service activities.
The research is led by Professor Yustina Yuni Suryanindiyah from Animal Science UGM, who serves as head of the research team, and Dr. Dewi Ratih Ayu Daning, Head of the Animal Agribusiness Study Program at Polbangtan Malang.
In developing Awassi sheep, Professor Suryanindiyah conducted studies on the Identification of Livestock Characteristics, Milk Production and Composition, and Reproductive Performance of Awassi Sheep and Their Crossbreeds.
Meanwhile, Dr. Dewi Ratih Ayu Daning focused on the development of Indigofera forage as feed for Awassi sheep.
Alongside their research, the joint team also conducted community service activities with Joyo Setinggil livestock partners on August 9-10, 2025.
The activities included delivering training on production management, record-keeping, and sheep milk processing.
“Research and community service activities resulting from academic–industry collaboration are a tangible manifestation of the university’s impactful role. We hope that Awassi sheep can bring real benefits to farmers,” said Professor Suryanindiyah.
